420 - The Big Marijuana Day

How it all began: History of 420

The history and origin of 420 as Weed Day goes back to the early 1970s. It began when a group of high school students in San Rafael, California, would meet after school to search for a rumored abandoned cannabis crop. They called themselves the “Waldos” because they often hung out by a wall outside the school. Initially, the term “420” referred to the time of day, 4:20 p.m., when the Waldos would meet.

Over time, the phrase “420” evolved into a code word among the group to refer to cannabis itself. It eventually spread beyond their circle, becoming a slang term for marijuana in general. In California, 420 holds significant cultural and historical importance within the cannabis community.

420 translates into April 20th

In 1990, the term gained significant attention when a group of Grateful Dead fans handed out flyers inviting people to smoke “420” on April 20th at 4:20 p.m. during one of the band’s concerts. This helped popularize the association between April 20th and cannabis consumption. California’s progressive attitude towards cannabis, coupled with its vibrant music scene and activism, contributed to the widespread adoption of 420 as a symbol of cannabis culture.Weed flower

Since then, April 20th, or 4/20, has been widely recognized as a day for cannabis enthusiasts to celebrate and advocate for marijuana legalization. It’s marked by gatherings, festivals, and protests in various parts of the world, where people come together to support cannabis culture and promote awareness of its uses and benefits.

Legalization of weed in California

In 1996, California became the first state in the U.S. to legalize medical marijuana with the passage of Proposition 215, also known as the Compassionate Use Act. This historic legislation marked a significant milestone in the movement towards cannabis legalization, further cementing California’s reputation as a pioneer in cannabis reform.

In 2016, California voters approved Proposition 64, legalizing recreational marijuana for adult use. This groundbreaking measure not only legalized the sale and possession of cannabis but also established a framework for regulating the industry, including licensing and taxation.

Today, 420 remains a symbol of celebration, advocacy, and solidarity within California’s cannabis community. Each year on April 20th, cannabis enthusiasts across the state gather to commemorate the plant, promote legalization efforts, and celebrate the progress made in cannabis reform. From festivals and gatherings to educational events and activism, California continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the cultural significance of 420 within the broader cannabis movement.

Life Enhanced with Cannabis products

With the legalization of marijuana consumption, the state of California began issuing out permits for cannabis dispensaries to legally sell weed. Licensed growers are producing new strains with different flavors, effects, and potency. These products are lab tested for quality and THC content. California is laced with numerous licensed Cannabis dispensaries that offer branded and quality approved cannabis products. Recreational use of marijuana products is growing in leaps and bounds.

Users now have a choice to consume cannabis is numerous forms, other than the traditional method of rolling their own joints with the marijuana flower. Readymade prerolls and blunts are a convenient way to smoke. Cannabis extracts in the form of cartridges for vapes are also popular. Marijuana concentrates can be found in many forms. There is a segment of users who like to dab using a bong.

Medicinal use of cannabis has also gained popularity and the therapeutic benefits are being widely recognized by the medical fraternity. Topicals and cannabis infused wellness products in the form of patches, creams, tinctures, bath bombs etc are also in demand.

Those who are not keen on smoking or vaping usually resort to cannabis infused edibles. Gummies, chews, chocolates and cookies are the most popular types of weed edibles. Some medical users prefer edibles as they offer dosage control.
